York ABC has always had our boxers turning to the pro ranks when the time is right. Old time greats Jackie Raine, the late Con “kid” Bailey and modern day great three times world champion contender Henry Wharton were all fantastic examples of supreme boxers to come out of the city.

Other pro – fighters connected with or trained at the York club are: Billy Wilson, Jamie Wharters, Pinky Burton, Graham Fern, Danny Wright and Ritchie Scarf.

All these boxers had something in common, once turning pro they had to travel to train, Doncaster, Leeds, Hull, Sheffield and other Yorkshire cities where familiar training grounds for them.

Now York boxers can turn pro and base their training in York with former York ABC and St Paul’s ABC amateur boxer Glen Banks.

Glen qualified as York’s first pro coach for many years, and took out his licence with the British Boxing Board of Control.

Glen is building a stable of fighters and is now training Harry Mathews, Matt Doyle and Danny Gell.
