The History Of York Boxing Club

York Boxing Club was established in 1967 at our first home in North St York.

Since then we have moved on two occasions:

Once to the Fifth Avenue Gym in York, and the other to the Olympia Club in Selby, with coaches working at the famous Leeds boxing club, St. Pat's ABC which has now sadly closed.

We have produced thirty one champions at club and national level, and seven professionals started out as boys with us:

Modern day great Henry Wharton who fought Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank and Robin Reid in three world title fights, started his career with us before moving to Leeds based club St. Pat’s.

Billy Wilson, (our head coach) Jamie Warters, Graham Fern, Harry Mathews, Mathew Doyle and Danny Gell.

Danny Gell was one of the first boxers to be selected for the International Boxing Academy at Hough Hall College in Durham, followed by Mathew, Luke Atkins and Harry.

Other notable boxers connected with the club are: Tommy Hields, Richie Scarth, Pinky Burton, the great Jackie Raine and the late Con “Kid” Bailey. Jack being head coach until retiring at 78 years old.

It is with thanks to Jack and his wife Inga Raine the club continues to this day.

In 2004 York Boxing Club became a registered charity with the Charity Commission. In 2007 we developed Off the Hook, our education department.
